CODEC DICTIONARY aims at creating a social dictionary for multimedia developers where all the definitions are under 300 characters. The dictionary enables the user to quickly search and refer to the definitions the relevant community has submitted.

sample - A sample is a small digital sound file of an instrument, voice, or other sound effect.
sampling - Sampling is a process of reducing continuous signal to a discrete value signal. A common example is the conversion of a sound wave (a continuous-time signal) to a sequence of samples (a discrete-time signal).
Saturation - The Saturation filter, sometimes called chroma, deals with the strength or purity of a color. Saturation represents the amount of gray in proportion to the hue. Values range from -100 (percentage of desaturation, duller colors) to +100 (percentage of saturation increase).
SBR - stands for 'Spectral Band Replication'. Its a technology to enhance audio or speech codecs, especially at low bit rates and is based on harmonic redundancy in the frequency domain.
SECAM - Sequential Couleur avec Memoire
Sinc Filter - In signal processing, a sinc filter is an idealized filter that removes all frequency components above a given bandwidth, leaves the low frequencies alone, and has linear phase.
SMPTE - Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers
SND - SND is used for SouND file. It is used as an extension to represent digital audio format file.
SNR Signal to Noise Ratio - Signal-to-noise ratio (often abbreviated SNR or S/N) is a measure used in science and engineering to quantify how much a signal has been corrupted by noise.
spectrometer - An apparatus used for recording and measuring spectra, esp. as a method of analysis
Stereoscopy - Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopic or 3-D imaging) is any technique capable of recording three-dimensional visual information or creating the illusion of depth in an image.
Storage Aspect Ratio (SAR) - It is the ratio of pixel dimensions. SAR = DAR/PAR.
stream - stream is a (sequential) delivery mechanism. In case of media stream, the media is constantly delivered to the end-user from the server over a period of time. Check for LiveStream
